Brain structure (the way the whole thing is put together; brains are all very, very similar, but subtly different on the microscopic scale) and genes, mostly. Subtle changes in the proteins that are made by your body causes subtle changes in the outcome of the organism as a whole.

Personality differences may not seem like subtle changes to you or i, but they are. We're really more the same than we are different.

And then, of course, there's external stimuli. The way your neurons talk to each other is determined in part by the input to your brain.

It's really a combination of everything. Small changes have real consequences in the outcome as a whole.

If it's genetic then why are we not like our brothers and sisters in personality?

Because they do not share our genes. They are similar in many ways, but their actual genetic makeup is different.

A better question would be one about identical twins. And identical twins do indeed have personality traits in common.

And like i said, it's not *just* genes. It's also external stimuli, brain structure, horomones, chemicals in the blood, etc.

Oh, but they do.

Black bars are identical twins. White bars are fraternal twins.

Can they prove this is genetic and not just because of nurture?

Besides, political views are different from actual personality, how many people do you know who have actually thought through their political views?

Exactly.

After all, how many people have thought through their personality?

And to answer your question, well, it's not quite that simple.

Like i said, some of it is genetic.
But then, some of it is also brain structure. Some of it is external influence. Some of it is horomones and blood chemistry.
You can determine that all of these things have influence, and you can even determine how much. Exactly where one ends and the other begins isn't always clear, however.

It's all causal in nature though, one way or another.

The structure of the brain and the hormones and blood chemistry, what regulates them? If not genetics, than what? If it is genetics however, then do you posit we have no free will at all?

It's both genetics, external influence, and physical structure. The way you're put together is partly determined by genetics, but it's also partly determined by fetal development.

Yep. I don't think the idea of free will even makes sense.
