What choice was there? They already had the cure. It wasn't a matter of saving lives.

It doesn't say they already had the cure, and also, I don't know what kind of information they got out of it, the article doesn't say, but if they were trying to prove a legitimally medical hypotheses, and the racism was just a guiltless way out for them, then I think that the actual medical grounds are fairly strong.

Syphilis is caused by a bacterial infection. It can be cured by penicillin. This has been known since before the 40's.

It's the choice between a few deaths or a lot of deaths, which would you choose?

100 deaths by a disease or 1 death by my murder

i can sleep with 100 dying by a disease Crying or Very sad
better than i could sleep with even 1 person dying by my murder. Twisted Evil

but to each is own.

note to self: do not participate in any medical experiments south of asia and east of africa. Shocked

Killing people for medical research is not ethically defensible when there are no lives depending on the research, as is the case here.

You don't know that there was not, neither do I, I was just pointing out my stance that medical research which sacrifices some isn't morally reprehensible in and of itself.

We don't need that method of medical testing for advancements. That's what wars are for.

A single vial of smallpox dropped in Times square, AIDS would look like flu season.

As a matter of fact, i do. I don't pull this stuff out of my ass. It's a fact - plain and simple - that syphilis was easily curable by the time the 40's came around.

Medical research doesn't always mean that they are looking for a cure.

And, like i said, medical research that involves killing people is not ethically defensible when the results of the research won't save people.

Just because they aren't looking for a cure for syphilis doesn't mean it won't save people.

Any action you ever take could conceiveably save someone down the line.

That's a different matter from pursuing research that can be reasonably shown to have potential for saving people - which theirs did not.
