"A squad leader, Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, is charged with murdering 12 people himself, and with another murder count in the deaths of six other Iraqis."

Nothing like getting the go ahead from your president to invade a country based on fabricated, cherry picked intelligence and then murdering people in cold blood.

This president and these soldiers in particular are an embarrassment to our country.

What say you?

It's never going to change, no amount of adulation will turn normal people into infallible heroes. Soldiers aren't monsters and they aren't saints, they are normal people who are asked (and in a professional army you could say volunteered) to do some very unusual things. Every time you give a human being the unchecked power to kill, things can and will go wrong.

Grassrooter is right, there's a certain percentage of people, no matter how well trained, who will crack under the pressure of combat and do something like this. Having never been in a combat situation like that myself, I try to judge the system that creates that rather than the murderers, who look to me like victims of it.

I don't know that "cracking" is the right word. No small amount of people are homicidal to begin with, and some of them make it into the army.
