Why not? It takes a long time to degrade and is still radioactive even though it has been depleted. I have seen a lot of reports that have said this too.

It's true that it's radioactive, but that alone doesn't make it WMD. Plenty of things in life are radioactive.

You cannot use depleted uranium to make a nuclear bomb. It wouldn't make an effective dirty bomb, either. It's used because it's a very heavy metal - heavier than lead, even. It makes good armor, and good projectiles too.

It's radioactive enough to be bad for your health, but it's not radioactive enough for that radioactivity to be used as a weapon.

But the term WMD now falls under the umbrella of "Anything that can kill more than 20 things at a time" i.e. clorine bombs, dirty bombs etc.

Or, better yet, would it be called a WMD if somebody was using it here on our soil?

There actually isn't any particular definition for WMD. It's more just a loosely agreed upon set of weapons that are all extraodinarily destructive and non-conventional.

Tank shells and tank armor do not fall into WMD.

No. Again, it isn't used for its radioactive properties. It's not radioactive enough to be used for a weapon in that sense. It's just used for tank armor and tank shells.

But it will irradiate an area where shells and bullets have fallen, right? Maybe give soldiers who handle ammo and ride inside a "Uraniumobile" cancer?

I'm not sure to what degree the soldiers inside tanks are shielded.

But you're right, it's a health hazard one way or another. Especially with the spent ammunition lying around.

That doesn't make it (the radioactivity) a weapon, though.

BAGHDAD (AP) - The Iraqi government announced plans Tuesday to shorten the curfew in the capital by two hours, saying security had improved enough to let residents stay on the streets until 10 p.m.

This certainly appears to indicate improvement, though I suppose it depends on how you define "working."

I wonder whether you feel the slightest bit ashamed of the glee you exhibit at this news. (My guess is that you don't.)

I can only tell you that it sure seems as though you take pleasure in thinking things continue to deteriorate there, regardless of who may be in harms way. I noted no outrage at the people who set off the bombs and no empathy for the dead and suffering, just smug self-righteousness at being able to suggest that things are still getting worse over there.

I see a lot of that lately... it's like a large percentage of Americans are rooting for us to fail over there, and somehow have the gall to add, "but I support the troops." I've come to actually believe that there are people who hate Bush more than they love their country, and they are willing to see our troops massacred--feel a morbid vindication at each new report of an American death--in order to prove that they are right and Bush is wrong.

You see...I see a smug self-righteousness in our decider-in-chief when shown over and over and over again that this situation is completely unwinable He still keeps our men and women in harms way
...we now have a full-blown civilwar and it keeps deteriorating daily
He lied to get us there
and he is still lying to keep us there
...Now if you want to continue to fool yourself about this situation and think that something positive will come of it .... go right ahead
but I want them home pronto...not another life for this fiasco

I don't doubt that you think that, nor that you are completely unqualified to make that call. That is the essence of smug self-righteousness.
