A senior Russian space official sharply criticized an assertive new U.S. space policy signed by President George W. Bush, saying Wednesday that it would increase tension and could lead to military confrontation in space, The Associated Press news agency reports.

In the first revision of U.S. space policy in nearly a decade, Bush signed an order earlier this year asserting the United States’ right to deny adversaries access to space for hostile purposes and saying the United States will oppose treaties or other restrictions that seek to prohibit or limit U.S. access to or use of space.

“This document can be seen today as the first step toward a serious deepening of the military confrontation in space,” the Interfax news agency quoted Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos, as saying.

“Now the Americans are saying that they want not only to go to space but they want to dictate to others who else is allowed to go there,” Davydov said, according to the report.

The order says the United States will “preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom of action in space; dissuade or deter others from either impeding those rights or developing capabilities intended to do so” and “deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to U.S. national interests.”

Davydov criticized what he said were U.S. plans to deploy weapons in space and said that Russia could respond if the United States does so.

The White House has said the policy does not call for the development or deployment of weapons in space.

As the U.S. space policy was being reviewed last year, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov threatened retaliatory steps if any country put weapons in space.

Moscow’s concerns about space-based weapons go back to the Soviet-era space race and U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s 1980s plans for a “Star Wars” missile defense system.

Bush’s order, signed more than two months ago, was not publicly announced.

when will it stop? why do these people in power in this country think that they have the right to dictate and mandate the actions of everyone else. how can they claim the moon? how can they try to claim space?

you know the deal with antarctica?
it is there and any nation is allowed to go there and research. all political affiliations have to be abandoned when there and there is to be no military related thing/activities period.

it is for the good of man, not profit, not power.

Theres a whole bunch of stuff you don't pay for, especially in the space area, most of the last few space launches have been almost completely funded by other countries. America thinks it's a waste of money, because you know, the worlds doing just fine as it is, it'll sustain us for another million years... NOT. I doubt it will sustain us for another hundred.

The arrogance of this admin didn't go away after the election, apparently. The fine art of diplomacy has been lost on the President and the rest of us will be apologizing for his elitist policies and attitudes for yrs to come. Oh..where is Madeline Albright when we need her???

what is your fucking point?

that this is the right way of going about things?

that we should support and cheer people acting like selfish, fools?

we should go off and continue to go about things the wrong way, because that is how it has been done in the past?

What the hell are you nacking at?

Your right what is my point, you sure as hell haven't found it.

I just find him saying "Conflict in space" a little too over the edge, unless this is really the matrix and we are flying in space in kool shiney space craft. We can't actually fight in space. I either want to disclaim this as crap, or find out if he is trying to say confrontation OVER space, because that sounds understandable to me.

You won't see the point because its not being made to you.. but it doesn't matter, you kinda off on it anyway.

Space can't be regulated, no point in trying. By the time we can actually regulate space or space is closer to mankind, there won't be resulting problems.

Nah shit, but if you in the US. Would you really care?

If you think the government needs tabs, then the people need to do something. If I remember correctly the constitution says for the people by the people.

Today, The constitution isn't even for the people. It's for the rich elites.

Of course I would care. I don't think anyone in their right mind can control space. Plus, This wasn't just Bush. If I'm not mistaken the Clinton Administration had their eye on space for quite a while. People have found a way to privatize natural resources so they could keep the money for themselves to maintain their dominance. Wouldn't surprise me if they did go after space.
