So a dog is not a dog for someone from Russia? It is a "insert russian word for dog here"??

Pretty much. Both words link to the same idea, but the russian guy speaks in terms of the russian word, and not the english word. And if he's never heard english, the sounds associated with "dog" won't mean anything to him.

No. Not understanding the english word for dog does not change a russian man's understanding of the idea of dog.

Of course it does, because the Russian word for dog carries a slightly different cultural meaning than the English word for dog.

If a russian word does not mean the same thing as an english word, then they aren't translations of each other!

But even suppose that when russians say "dog", they really mean big dogs. Little lap dogs are called something else. Does that mean that a russian cannot think of 'dogs' as a whole, as we do in english?

No.

Yes it does, if they don't have a word for it, they have to think either big dogs or little dogs, just as there is a female and male version of different words, people can't think of them as asexual without learning a language like english.

How do new ideas come about, if thought is limited by language?

...so you believe that, instead of having ideas and using convenient series of sounds to communicate those ideas to others, we come up with convenient series of sounds and...somehow an idea happens?

How does that work?

When we come up with a new concept, we have to name it, or we cannot think or talk about it.

We cannot talk about it without naming it, surely, but how is it that you can come up with it without thinking of it?

You phrase it from within other words.
